Planning for potash mines is underway in the Holbrook Basin in northern Arizona.
Potash mining is new to the state, although Arizona has a long
history with other types of mines, especially copper mines. Many of us in the area are just
beginning to learn how potash mines compare. We are beginning to think about how
to evaluate the economic opportunities, as well as the risks to the environment.
Many socio-economic and environmental issues are addressed in the process of
deciding
whether a project should go forward, or in setting terms and conditions for it
to go forward. Usually, issues are raised by groups with different priorities and
different perceptions of costs and benefits. This leads to a search for common ground,
along with efforts to reconcile differences.
As proponents move their projects through planning and permitting, there will be
opportunities for public involvement and influence in decision
making. Naturally, the
first step is to find out what's going on. The Guide to Potash is intended to help
everyone, especially those in local communities, become aware, get educated, and
keep track of events as they unfold.
